The world was made so that it was possible for everyone to do everything on their own. The goal of a person was to become fully independent and achieve their own goals through their own will, and not through dumb luck nor through help from others. Dependency was dangerous, and friendship was a trap. The more you’re attached to someone, the more emotionally invested you become in them, the more you start wanting to always call on their help to work on even the simplest of tasks, and the more you lose your ability to do things on your own. You feel lonely when they’re not around, and if you complain, it just stresses both parties out. You had to be a responsible adult, not a sobbing child.
Dependency was a weakness, and that’s what Satoko believed.
She was stupid for latching onto her brother’s arm and hiding behind his back whenever their aunt came to punish her, because he would always be forced to take responsibility for her, and he would never be able to get any rest because of her. She had no idea what her dependency had on his mentality, and one day, he just snapped, gave up, and ran away. That’s why Satoko was willing to forgive Mion for throwing her across the room that one day; it was because Satoko fully deserved it, especially for crying over something as simple as a spilled lunch.
Now that Satoko lived with her uncle, even though he did abuse her at times, she has learned to put up with it, especially since it was also very easy to manipulate him, considering how much of a simpleton he was. As long as she did the chores around the house, as long as she could cook for herself, she was fine. Save for maybe an hour of verbal slanders and/or a bruise on the face from a hard slap, if Teppei did anything more to her, she could simply call child abuse on him. For him, life insurance money and inheritance money was at stake, and she knew he didn’t want that.
Then again, if she really did feel compelled to call child abuse, wouldn’t that also mean she couldn’t handle the pressures of the real world? Such case was close for her for a few days now, when her uncle for some reason started punishing her for very miniscule things, and she had to run out of the house and hide before she unconsciously screamed for her brother’s help.
Don’t worry, don’t worry, there are worse cases in this world, you should be fortunate to even have what you have now…
